Using of VPCs

Purpose and advantage

Most MetaTrader users are likely familiar with the following setup: The Custom Expert Advisor application is executed in a MetaTrader instance on your personal computer. While this arrangement works for many, it does have certain drawbacks. For example, if your computer undergoes an operating system update, experiences a power outage, or loses internet connection, your Custom Expert Advisor could temporarily go offline. In the worst-case scenario, this could lead to unnecessary losses due to missed opportunities or warning signals that the application would typically respond to.

In contrast, a Virtual Private Computer (VPC) in automatic trading is a remote computer that operates 24/7. It enables automated trades without needing you to keep your computer powered on and connected to the internet. These VPCs are usually hosted in server centers equipped with professional power management, stable and fast internet connections, and other technical solutions for long-term stability.

The following illustration presents a more stable approach for operating the Custom Expert Advisor. You can avoid the typical update issues associated with Windows by configuring a VPC based on a Linux operating system (e.g., Xubuntu with Desktop Environment). Since MetaTrader can also be executed on Linux, the user experience remains unchanged.

You might be wondering how to access this virtual machine?

With a remote access application, like Google Remote Desktop, you can access the virtual desktop environment where MetaTrader and your Stop Loss Manager are executed. As many remote access applications are available for Windows, iOS, or Android, you can use your MetaTrader from anywhere and open/close trades within the remote desktop environment.

This method ensures long-term stability and the lowest possible ping, as you can choose where to rent the VPC. The closer the VPC is to the broker's server, the better the ping results. There are dedicated server centers in cities like London, Chicago, and New York that only exist because of this need. Soon, a more detailed article on this topic will be published, along with a step-by-step guide on configuring a VPC specifically for use with MetaTrader.
